About Us

ChineseTime NYC is dedicated to providing children a full cultural and linguistic learning environment. The program was initially formed by several Chinese families affiliated with Columbia University to teach their children Chinese, but has gradually gained attention in the local community. It was officially registered as a nonprofit organization in 2017.

Though the majority of our students have Chinese heritage, there are some without it. Children in the program are grouped by their age as well as their comprehension of the Chinese language. In our classes, we use Chinese textbooks as a basic learning material, but we also incorporate various cultural activities, such as Chinese calligraphy, cooking, singing, storytelling, and poem recitation into the curriculum to further engage the students. Teachers mostly use Chinese to teach the class, and the children are always encouraged to communicate in Chinese as well. Our goal is to help children gradually build up their comprehension of the language to the best of their ability in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Our teachers all have a solid background in the language, with many years of experience teaching children. Not only are they enthusiastic about teaching, but they also understand the students’ characteristics and needs of learning Chinese in a non-Chinese society. Because of our small class sizes, teachers take into account each child’s family’s comprehension of the language, as well as the students’ individual learning pace when designing their curriculums in order to maximize the learning experience. We strive to provide a platform that allows children to be passionate about learning the diverse aspects of the Chinese language and culture.
